Date: 16/10/2024
Participants: Primary Section Students
Time: Library Period
Venue: School Library
LEARNING OUTCOME OF THE ACTIVITY:
Students identified a range of new words, enhancing their language skills and comprehension. Many students expressed enthusiasm about their reading experiences and the new words they learned. Sharing their words in groups helped students build confidence in their speaking and writing abilities.
ACTIVITY OVERVIEW:
“Reading is not just about understanding words; it’s about discovering new worlds.”
Students were invited to choose age-appropriate books from the library. A variety of genres, including storybooks, informational texts, and picture books, were made available. Each student had dedicated time to read their chosen book. They were encouraged to pay attention to the story and take note of unfamiliar words. After reading, students wrote down at least three new words they encountered. They were guided to include a simple definition and a sentence using each word to reinforce understanding. Students gathered in small groups to share their new words and sentences. This collaborative sharing allowed them to learn from each other and celebrate their discoveries. The “Read and Write” activity was a successful initiative that engaged primary students in both reading and vocabulary development. The combination of reading, writing, and sharing created a dynamic learning environment.
