Report of the activity:
“A nation’s strength lies not just in its achievements, but in the sacrifice of those who paved the way for its freedom.”
At St. John International School, we strive to cultivate a deep sense of patriotism and respect for our country’s history in the hearts of young minds. Every year on August 14, the people of Palghar observe Hutatma Divas, paying homage to the five young martyrs who gave their lives for the freedom of Maharashtra.
On this day in 1942, Govind Thakur, Kashinath Pagdhare, Ramprasad Tiwari, Sukur More, and Ramchandra Churi, all between the ages of 17 and 20, were shot by British forces during a protest for the cause of India’s independence. This tragic event marked a turning point in the movement for freedom in the region. Their sacrifices are honored annually at the Hutatma Chowk in Palghar, where a bloodstained flag is carried in the procession and displayed in the central hall.
St. John International School’s Grade IX Council Leaders participated in the tribute this year. Students visited Hutatma Chowk, where they joined the public in a moment of silence at 12:39 p.m., the exact time when the first martyr was shot. The two minutes of silence were followed by chanting “Vande Mataram,” a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave youths.
The observance of Hutatma Divas is not just a day of remembrance, but also an educational opportunity to reflect on the bravery and resilience of these young freedom fighters. Through cultural programs, memorial services, and discussions, the significance of this day continues to resonate with the community. It serves as a reminder that the ideals of sacrifice, courage, and patriotism remain at the heart of Maharashtra’s identity.
The school believes that engaging the youth in such activities is essential to keeping the spirit of these martyrs alive. By educating our students about the sacrifices made for the formation of Maharashtra, we ensure that these ideals are passed on to future generations, preserving the legacy of those who fought for a free India.
