Report:

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) organised a two-day Capacity Building Programme on Classroom Management. The workshop was organized for teachers and was conducted at St John International School, Palghar on 18th and 19th July 2025. It was conducted by Ms. Rashmi Tyagi and Ms. Richa Kumar. The training focused on styles of teaching, effective teacher-student relations, and the essential components of effective classroom management.

The two-day session began with an introduction and a discussion on Classroom Management. The session mainly focused on the three components of Effective Classroom Management:

  • Content Management
  • Conduct Management
  • Covenant Management

It was a great learning experience, as it helped the teachers to adopt various techniques to make the teaching and learning process more effective. There were many topics which were covered in the two-day programme such as – Understanding Classroom Management, Physical Arrangement in Classroom, Components of Effective Classroom, Teaching Styles, Learning Styles, Managing Classes with Large Number of Students and Management of Inter-Personal Relationships.

The workshop revolved around active discussions between the teachers and the resource persons. Teachers were introduced to various innovative methods for managing classrooms. They were divided into different groups, and they actively participated in evaluating their own style of teaching through several self-evaluation surveys, helping them to understand their teaching styles Teachers also sportingly took part in group activities which involved case studies, role plays, presenting lesson plans and also shared their personal experiences in classrooms which helped others to learn new ways of interacting with children.

One of the most important challenges for a teacher is to manage time. A table relating to time management was explained. This included four quadrants – I (Important, Urgent Task), II (Important, Not Urgent Task), III (Not important but Urgent Task) and IV (Not important and Not Urgent task). A good teacher needs to identify the type of task and complete the table accordingly. Three questionnaires based on Teaching Style, Learning Style and Classroom Management Style were also attempted by the participants.

The experienced resource persons beautifully explained that management of the student-teacher relationship is the cornerstone of classroom management. If a teacher has a good relationship with students, then students readily accept the rules and procedures and the disciplinary action that follows their violation. The importance of building a rapport with the children was also discussed. The most effective teacher-student relationships are characterised by three specific teacher behaviours – 1. Exhibiting appropriate levels of dominance 2. Exhibiting appropriate levels of cooperation 3. Being aware of high-need students The need and importance of inclusive education was highlighted, followed by an inspiring movie.

It was a fun-filled and enriching session, full of hands’-on activities for the teachers to indulge in and learn from. The enlightened teachers now look forward to applying the strategies effectively in the classroom. The workshop concluded with this thought that teachers should comprehend the child’s mind and try various ways to reach their level to enlighten and assess their knowledge and the topics discussed were not only required for the evaluation of child’s ability but it is important to foster quality learning to make the school child friendly.
