LEARNING OUTCOME OF THE ACTIVITY:
Students learned how to use a dictionary as a resource for understanding words and improving their language skills. By looking up words and learning their meanings, students expanded their vocabulary. The dictionary scavenger hunt format made learning about dictionaries. Students actively engaged in the activity, demonstrating improved skills in using a dictionary.
ACTIVITY OVERVIEW:
“The dictionary is a treasure chest of inspiration. Find the word that resonates with you and let it be the catalyst for your next big breakthrough.”
The librarian explained the significance of a dictionary in understanding language and building vocabulary. Students learned about the various features of a dictionary, such as alphabetical order, guide words, and how to locate words and their definitions. Students received a list of words they needed to find in the dictionary. The list was designed to challenge students to practice their dictionary skills. Students used alphabetical order and guide words to locate their assigned words efficiently. This part of the activity taught them how to navigate a dictionary effectively. After finding each word, students recorded the word and its definition on a provided sheet. This helped reinforce their understanding of each word and its meaning. Once all words were found and recorded, students took turns sharing one interesting fact or definition they learned from their assigned word. This encouraged them to think about and articulate what they had learned.
