Report of the activity:

On 14th January 2024, St. John International School, Palghar, celebrated Makar Sankranti. The event began with a prayer song and a warm welcome speech. Students of Grade V presented insightful topics such as Joy of Kite Flying, Harvest Time – A Celebration of Nature’s Bounty,Makar Sankranti – Unity in Diversity, and The Sun’s Journey into Capricorn, which highlighted the cultural and seasonal significance of the festival. A special kite-making activity was organized for students from Grade I to V, where they created their own kites. The students of Grade V also performed lively folk songs, reflecting the festive spirit of kite flying. Students brought tilgul and puran poli, traditional sweets enjoyed during Makar Sankranti, and shared them with everyone, adding a personal touch to the festivities. Both students and teachers participated by dressing in black, which symbolizes the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season. Black clothing absorbs warmth from the sun, marking the transition into a time of renewal and growth. The program explored the cultural symbolism of the sun’s transition, encouraging participants to appreciate nature’s cycles and the changing seasons.

Overall, the event provided a meaningful opportunity to connect with traditions, share happiness, and gain a deeper understanding of Makar Sankranti’s cultural and social significance.
